Finding CentOS or RedHat version

If you’re running a CentOS or RedHat distribution, there are different ways of finding the version that you’re running. We also have notes on how to find the version if you’re running Ubuntu or Debian.

Finding running version of CentOS / RedHat :

root# cat /etc/issue.net
CentOS release 5.5 (Final)
Kernel \r on an \m

Shows the version of CentOS that I’m running “5.5 (Final)”

root# cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 5.5 (Final)

Same as before. Gives us the version “5.5 (Final)”

Knowing the version of your OS is extremely helpful to keeping your server updated, or to install packages that are not included in the default repositories.
